The Noir Cliveden black leather double-breasted trench coat with buckled belt

Women's Leather Trench Coats: 5 Cuts and How to Choose

To choose a women's leather trench coat, decide three things in order: the front, the length and the colour. A double-breasted front is the classic and the most structured. A single-breasted front is cleaner and more minimal. Midi length is the most elegant and works over dresses and tailoring. Hip length is easier for everyday and for petite frames. Black is the most adaptable colour, and cognac is the one that gets noticed.

The trench began as a practical coat and became one of the most recognisable shapes in clothing: the double row of buttons, the belt, the storm flap at the shoulder, the strapped cuff. Cut in leather, every one of those details gains weight. The coat stops being a layer you carry in case of rain and becomes the outfit itself. A leather trench over a plain knit and trousers needs nothing added. The five coats below are from the Christopher Noir Women's Tailored Coats collection.

How do the five trench cuts compare?

The Noir Hatfield Single-breasted, concealed Long, straight skirt Minimal £595
The Noir Harewood Double-breasted Hip Short, everyday £495

1. What makes a trench coat a trench?

A set of details that all once had a job: a double-breasted front, a gun flap at the shoulder, strapped cuffs, a belted waist and a skirt long enough to cover the knee. The Noir Cliveden keeps every one. It is cut in black leather with two rows of tonal buttons, notch lapels finished with contrast-edge topstitching, a gun flap, strapped and buckled cuffs, a buckled self-belt and piped panel seams above a gently flared midi-length skirt. The fit is tailored through the body with an A-line skirt. If you want one leather coat for life, this is the shape.

2. Single-breasted or double-breasted?

Double-breasted is structured and traditional, with a wider front that suits being worn belted. Single-breasted is narrower and quieter, and it hangs well open. If you find trench detailing fussy, choose single. The Noir Hatfield reduces the trench to line and proportion: a single-breasted front with a concealed placket, clean notch lapels, a self-tie leather belt, a horizontal hip seam and a long, straight skirt. The fit is straight and streamlined.

3. Is a short trench easier to wear?

For daily life, yes. A hip-length trench is lighter, simpler to drive and travel in, and it keeps proportion on a shorter frame, where a long skirt can overwhelm. It pairs with jeans, leather trousers and wide-leg tailoring. The Noir Harewood is the trench in short form: hip-length black leather with a double-breasted front, epaulettes and storm flaps at the shoulders and back, a buckled self-belt with a D-shaped buckle, strapped cuffs and patch pockets.

4. Black or brown leather?

Black is sharper, more formal and stronger at night. Brown is warmer and softer in daylight, and it shows the character of the leather more openly. Cognac, a warm mid-brown, is the most striking of the browns and looks particularly good against cream, denim, navy and gold jewellery. The Noir Blenheim renders the heritage trench in warm cognac leather, with a double-breasted front, epaulettes and a buttoned gun flap, a classic trench collar with throat fastening and a buckled self-belt with a gold-tone buckle.

5. When does an embossed trench make sense?

When you want texture without colour. An embossed finish adds pattern to an all-black coat so the detail shows up close and stays quiet from a distance. The Noir Syon is a black leather trench with a croc-embossed collar and lapels, and a croc-embossed belt, pocket panels and cuff straps, over a double-breasted front and a straight midi skirt. Croc-embossed means leather pressed with the pattern, not exotic skin. We explain the finish in Crocodile-Embossed Leather: Texture as Statement.

How should a leather trench fit?

  1. Shoulders: the seam sits on the shoulder bone. Leather cannot be altered here easily, so get this right first.
  2. Sleeves: they end at the base of the thumb.
  3. Waist: the belt sits at your natural waist when buckled.
  4. Layering: there is room for a fine knit underneath without pulling at the buttons.

How do you style a leather trench coat?

  • Belted and closed: worn as a dress, with boots or heels.
  • Open, belt tied behind: over a knit and tailored trousers.
  • With a handbag in a contrasting texture: suede or a structured top-handle. See Women's Handbags.
  • Tonal: black on black, or cognac with cream and camel.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are available?

All five coats run from UK 6 to UK 18. Each product page advises taking your usual size.

Can you wear a leather trench in the rain?

Light rain will not harm it, but leather is not a raincoat. Wipe it dry with a soft cloth and let it air away from heat.

How do you care for a leather coat?

Professional leather care only. Hang it on a wide, shaped hanger with space around it. Our leather care guide covers the routine.

Is a leather trench warm enough for winter?

Leather blocks wind well. With a knit underneath, it serves through most of a British autumn and winter.
